Principle of Ultrasonic Testing for Composite Thickness:
Diamond (4.91 g/cm²·s) and tungsten carbide (8.34 g/cm²·s) are materials with significantly different acoustic impedances, creating a distinct interface signal between them. When testing with the tungsten carbide surface facing up, three distinct signals can be observed: the surface of the tungsten carbide, the bonding interface, and the surface of the diamond.

By calculating the time difference between the bonding interface and diamond surface signals, and using the known sound speed of diamond, the thickness of the diamond layer can be determined.
